Piling work begins

Daily Express (October 19, 1972) - KOTA KINABALU, Wednesday – The biggest and the most ambitious Bumiputra business enterprise in the State so far will comprise a 300-room, ultra-modern, 14-storey hotel, three 14-storey shop-houses and six 6-storey shop-houses. 

The project, brain child of Gaya Timber Sdn Bhd is estimated to cost over $20 million. Disclosing this today, a spokesman of the company told the Daily Express that the buildings will be constructed on a two-and-half acre site recently reclaimed near the Central Market. The project will be carried out in two phases, hotel will be constructed before the shop-houses.

“Our tourist industry is seriously handicapped by shortage of hotel rooms,” the spokesman said, “towards promoting tourism we’ve therefore decided to give priority to constructing the hotel.”

The hotel will have faces specifically designed for tourist-catering. These include a in-door swimming pool, a basement garden, a shopping centre and other modern facilities. The rooms will of course be fully air-conditioned.

Expected to be completed in 1974, piling work for the hotel has already begun, and is being carried out by Gaya Retreading (Tyre) Sdn Bhd. A total of 1,024 concrete piles are required for reinforcing the reclaimed ground, Every piece of pile is being driven into the ground at an estimated cost of $1,000.

Construction of the shop-houses will commerce after the hotel has been completed, constituting the second phase of the project.
