DAILY EXPRESS (4.10.1970) - SANDAKAN, Sat – Kota Kinabalu will have a $500,000 Olympic-sized swimming pool near the Lido Bar at Tanjong Aru beach and the Kota Kinabalu Town Board has already agreed to contribute $50,000 towards its construction.

The project is expected to be completed by 1973 when Sabah will play host to the Malaysian National Swimming Meet.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Communications and Works, Dato Pang Tet Tshung, who is also the President of Sabah Amateur Swimming Association, when he declared open the Third Sabah State Swimming Championships in Sandakan this afternoon.

In his speech, Dato Pang outlined the history of the Sabah Amateur Swimming Association since its establishment in 1968 and the planned developments for Sabah in the sport of organised swimming. Without improved facilities, he stressed, it would not be possible to improve the standard of swimming, let alone for Sabah to host the National Swimming Championships in 1973.

He pointed out that State Championships in the past and even the present one had been merely experimental and little had been done to explore and exploit the talent “which we all feel exists in our sporting Sabah.”

He expressed confidence that such talent could be developed to the full and in such a way as to be able to add to the rising tide of the swimming strength of Malaysia.
