NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES - (Monday, October 22, 1962) - JESSELTON, Sunday. – A day-long meeting of the officials of the former United Party and the Democratic Party of North Borneo today named the new Party. It will be known as the Borneo Utara National Party.

Early last week the United Party and the Democratic Party of North Borneo agreed to merge.

It was decided that both the political parties should be dissolved and form a new political organisation.

Considerable discussion took place on the question of naming the new party. It is understood that both sides did not want the words “United” and “Democratic”.

Because of this they had to find a new name. Now the new party will be known as Borneo Utara National Party.

But many people here tonight expressed surprise over the choice of name of the new Party.

The surprise was expressed due to the fact that in a memo-submitted to Lord Lansdowne by all political parties it was agreed that North Borneo be known as Sabah in Malaysia. They considered that “Borneo Utara” would be out of date in a very near future.

The meeting also elected a new central committee.

They have had to elect the new officers tonight because of tomorrow’s scheduled meeting of the newly formed Sabah Alliance Party.

The meeting ended at 9pm tonight.

Today’s closed door meeting, elected the following into the office:

Chairman – Mr Lee Yun Hing; Deputy Chairman – Mr Ngui Ah Kui; seven vice-chairmen – Messrs Wong Piak Hueng, Peter Lo, Shelley Yap, Pang Tet Tshung, B. S. Willie, Hong Sin Foh, and Tai Nyuk Ho; Secretary General – Mr Khoo Siak Chiew; Deputy Secretary-General – Mr Andrew Lin and Asst Secretary-General Mr Cheuk Ming To; Treasurer – Mr Wong Kim Nam; Asst Treasurer – Mr Kwan Yui Ming; Political Secretary – Mr Yeh Pao Tze; Asst Political Secretary – Mr Y.
