SUDC’s fault for not having land sub-divided

I READ with great interest the recent “land dispute” between KK Chinese Chamber Of Commerce (KKCCC) and SUDC on one hand and the “dilemma of the buyers” of the now abandoned Star City project on the other.

Many writers and politicians have expressed their comments and ALL seem to be pointing fingers at the SUDC. I share the same opinion!

SUDC is owned by the State Government, empowered to develop our city. But after so many decades, they failed miserably. Free and prime lands were given to them to JV with private developers. Today they are still in a miserable state, financially, only left with their office building which they cannot sell.

Why? Nearly all GLCs are not performing well because of abuses of power and rampant corruption. The new CM vouches to revamp these GLCs and sack all non-performing Board members and management staff but we do not see any action so far.

SUDC, as claimed by a former CM, is famous for bullying private individuals and schools on lands issues. Using their “all-powerful” lawyers/architect consultant team (all fees are of course paid by the taxpayers!), exploiting “loopholes” in the law, neglecting their social responsibilities toward society and the rakyat, who pay their salaries.

In the above case, they signed a JV to develop a piece of prime land (reportedly worth RM90-100m today) with a developer who failed and went bankrupt, leaving behind the above “disputed school land” and over 200 poor buyers “in limbo”. With their new found “cash rich developer from China”, they intend to demolish the old StarCity and build a skyscraper, worth according to your report over RM1billion.

Why are we allowing “outsiders” to exploit and make huge profits while allowing our school and the buyers, the majority of who are Sabahans suffer?

And yet they have the cheek to ask the school to prove that it owns the land, arguing that they are the rightful title holder of the whole land in Asiacity. ( If you did not send in your master title for subdivision, how are people going to have their individual titles to prove?)

In any JV project, before the completion and issuance of OC, and subsequent subdivision of individual titles, who would own any individual title? They even dare to tell the world that they do not have the obligation to fulfill any promise made to KKCCC by their former JV lover!

Now the buyers are dead worried that SUDC might use the SAME excuse to try to pin them down and exploit them. I read in your Sunday column that a lot are pensioners whose life savings have now gone down the drain. Some have already left their lots to their kids in their Will.

We can only hope that the present state Government acts differently from their Federal counterparts, who made so many senseless U-turns on so many of their election manifesto. People are losing patience, economy is very bad outside and most of us suffer badly…while SUDC Board members are sitting in their aircon offices, flexing their muscle and telling the world that they do not have the obligation.

Are they any different from the previous BN style of administration? I do not see any!
