Stephens pleased with assurance by Indons

NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES - (Saturday, November 3, 1962) - KUCHING, THURSDAY. – The leader of the North Borneo Alliance, Mr Donald Stephens said today he was satisfied with Indonesia’s statement that it had no territorial ambitions in the Borneo territories.
But he said he would very much like to have an audience with the Sultan of Brunei to get his views on Malaysia and to try to urge the Sultan to commit his State to joining.
Mr Stephens denied that he had stated last weekend that he feared and Indonesian takeover of Brunei.
“It has never been my intention to antagonise the Indonesians.

“I have been afraid of the Indonesians one day claiming North Borneo I will readily admit, but I am satisfied with the Indonesian Government’s statement on the subject.”
He added: “After Goa, only fools would not see the dangers ahead for small countries like Sabah and Sarawak surrounded by countries like the Philippines and Indonesia.”

He stressed that Brunei was important to Sabah and Sarawak and added:
“In some way or other, our future must be inter-connected.”
