NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES (Friday, November 30, 1962) - SANDAKAN Thurs. – The suggestion put forward recently by Professor K.G. Tregonning of Singapore that an English University be established in the Borneo territories was welcomed by teachers at the Sandakan Teachers’ Association Committee Meeting on Tuesday evening.

It was felt that Educational Authorities should give consideration to the proposal particularly as a great deal of planning would be necessary before the University actually opened its doors.

The proposed constitution of the Sabah Teachers Union was also discussed. A Subcommittee consisting of Mr Shin Fook Sun, Mr Thew Vui Khiong, Mr C.A. Alexander and Mr J.R. Brummell was set up to look through the 126 page documents in detail.

(Recently Sandakan Teachers’ Association agreed in principle to the formation of a colonywide Teachers’ Organisation and steps are now being taken to have an agreed constitution worked out).

The committee also welcomed recent press reports that a pensions scheme for teachers would be started at some stage in the future and hoped that it would be implemented before long.

The chairman reported that he had received a letter from the Director of Education congratulating those who had brought the Association into being and wishing it every success.

Other points discussed were the holding of a social evening on December 8th by courtesy of the Teo Chew Association to enable teachers to get to know each other better.
