NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES - (Saturday, November 24, 1962) - JESSELTON Fri. – Several reductions in tariffs were decided upon at the North Borneo Electricity Board Meeting last Tuesday.

The 5pc surcharge on the Sandakan tariffs will abolished from 1st January, 1963.

An indication that the surcharge would be abolished was given by the Chairman of the Board, Mr. A.M. Grier, at the opening of the Tuaran line last May.

The meeting also decided that the tariffs at Tawau and Labuan will be reduced to the Jesselton level from 1st January, 1963.

This means that the domestic consumer in those places who is now paying 40 cents per unit for the first 35 units of electricity will next year pay 35 cents and 10 cents per unit for the first 60 units will pay 35 cents and 10 cents per unit instead of 12 for the reminder.

In the case of Labuan, current sales hardly justify this reduction, but the board goes that reduced will lead to a market increase in demand. If after six months this has not occurred the board may have to review this concession the Board’s Secretary, Mr. L.J. Carter.

Another reduction in the smaller towns will be for Tariff “C” consumers (hotels, clubs and institution) at Tuaran, Papar, Tenom, Keningau, Kudat and Lahad Datu where the flat rate will be reduced from 20 to 12 cents a unit from 1st January, 1963.

“These reductions are in accordance with the Board’s progressive policy of constantly keeping tariffs tinder review” commented the Secretary.
