NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES - (Friday, October 19, 1962) - JESSELTON, Thurs. – The Tawau Assisted Settlement Scheme is progressing satisfactorily reports the Director of Agriculture, but in spite of government efforts to get people from the West Coast to settle on the rich land available under this Scheme, there has been no response for four months.

There are only 31 settlers out of the 50 provided for under the pilot scheme which was started in July 1961.

The Scheme’s Committee, Mr E. J. H. Berwick, Mr M. Saville (Deputy Financial Secretary) and the Resident, East Coast, met at Tawau this week and discussed the position after inspecting the Scheme with the Agriculture Research Adviser to the UK Department of Technical Co-operation, Mr D. Rhind.

They decided that in future they would allow people on the East Coast as well as the West Coast to settle under the Scheme.

Under the Scheme settlers are allocated a 15-acre plot of land, a house, tools for clearing their land and assistance with the work, seeds and plants to start their crops, and help with food.

The pilot scheme allows for 50 families to settle on 800 acres of land reserved under the Scheme.

The crops of the 31 Kadazan and Chinese families who have settled from the West Coast are doing extremely well, and the settlers are happy in their new life.

Mr Berwick, Mr Saville and Mr Rhind returned to Jesselton yesterday after their visit to the East Coast.
