NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES (Wednesday, November 28, 1962) - KUDAT, Wed.- In the Kudat Magistrate's Court a crew member of a Filipino vessel was fined $350 for possessing an automatic pistol and five rounds of ammunition when he was not a person exempted from licensing under the Firearms Ordinance.
The pistol and ammunition which were concealed in a pillow aboard a vessel anchored at Pulau Malawali whilst enroute to Kudat, were not listed in the vessel record of firearms and the accused said that no one else on the vessel knew of their existence. He said that the pistol was for his personal protection.
The discovery was made during a search carried out by a combined army/police patrol. The fine was paid and the revolver cad ammunition confiscated. In a case under the Maintenance Ordinance, the Magistrate, Mr C.II. Wood, ordered the Defendant, a young Chinese employed in a local hotel, to pay $70 per month to his 19 year old wife.
The couple have been married for less than one year and the wife successfully claimed that her husband had neglected to maintain her though he was financially to do so.
