District Council to manage Tawau

North Borneo News & Sabah Times (Tuesday, 18th December 1962) - Tawau, Mon - The Chairman of the Tawau District Team, Mr E.A.C Pascoe at the last meeting of this year, on 13th December, reminded members that next year local government for the whole of the district would be concern of a newly-constituted District Council.

Mr. Pascoe particularly thanked the Divisional Engineer, Tawau, Mr K. MacRae, “for a most comprehensive Progress Report for 1962”. Notable features were. (1) the completion of the Department of Agriculture’s Quoin Hill Research Station laboratory; (2) four new classrooms and an extension to the Kinabutan Government Primary School and (3) the constitution of the Old Peoples Home Stage I.

Work currently in hand included the new Tawau fish market; the reclamation of the new hospital site and the construction of three new classrooms for the Government Junior Secondary School. The team welcomed news of improvement in the standard of Junior Officers quarters.

A total of 44 new contracts had been signed in Tawau district; and added to contracts signed towards the end of 1961 this bought the total number of contracts in operation to 61 for the year.

In reply to a question by Mr. Hong Teck Guan regarding flooding of the Tanjong Batu Road during high tides, the Divisional Engineer said that funds to raise the road level had been requested in the 1963 estimated.

Members noted that a refreshment room had been provided at Tawau Airport and that tenders to select a caterer were about to be called.
