North Borneo News And Sabah Times (Tuesday, 18th December 1962) - SANDAKAN, Mon - The Rotary club of Sandakan has presented to the Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan a portable electro-cardiograph.

The machine was accepted at the last Rotary lunch by Dr. C. James, Principal Medical Officer Sandakan.

In his speech of thanks Dr. James said that the machine would make it much easier for the doctors at the hospital to diagnose heart ailments and so help the doctors in their daily fight against ill health.

Explaining how the machine works Dr James went on to say that wires from the machines are fastened to parts of the small changes in the heart beats or valve action can be detected.

The machine ‘writes’ these pulsations on a chart by means of a moving pen so that the doctor has a permanent record that can be studied.

Another great advantage is that if the patient is suffering from a very obscure heart ailment then the chart could be sent by airmail to a specialist anywhere in the world who could study it and send back his diagnosis.

Rotary was only able to make this gift to the hospital through the efforts of all those who took part in the International Concert last January. All profits from this concert were used in the purchase of this machine.

Encouraged by the success of the concert, the Club plans to stage another International Concert next March. Rotarian George Bucknell, who produced and compered the last concert, is once more looking for artists of all nations for the next show.
