10 things your dog would tell you

1. MY life will be much shorter than yours; most likely 12-15 years. Any separation from you will seem like a few hours to you, but it will feel like months to me. Please remember this when you decide you want a dog for a pet.

2. Give me time to learn and understand what you need and want from me, give me time, love and patience while we learn to get to know one another.

3. Place your trust in me – it is crucial to my well being.

4. Don’t stay angry with me for long and do not lock me up, tie me up or ignore me. Please don’t think of hitting or scolding me as whatever I may have done was never with bad intentions. Everything I do is out of love for you.

5. I am a part of your life. You have your work, your friends, your parties and entertainment, but to me you are my whole life – you are my world!

6. Talk to me sometimes – even if I don’t understand your words. I will understand your voice when it is speaking to me and I can feel your sadness, your joy and your pain.

7. Please know I will never forget your kind acts, your generosity and love. I will always carry these in my heart and for this I will always love you.

8. I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you and I always will.

9. Before you choose to scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, have an illness or injury, feel pain or my heart is getting too old and weak.

10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death. Tell me you love me for I will always love you. I will always love you and I will always miss you, until we are reunited.
