LAST Friday a distressed call was made, claiming a dog had been injured in a hit and run in front of Centre Point and Sinsuran area in Kota Kinabalu

According to an eyewitness, the motorcyclist had allegedly seen the dog but did not bother to slow down even though he saw the dog crossing the road. The motorcyclist did, however, look back and the eyewitness asked him why he knocked the dog down when he could have avoided it.

The motorcyclist asked if it were his dog and when he said it was not, the motorcyclist simply said, “It’s only a stray” and drove off without a care!

The dog was lying helplessly on the road and in obvious pain until rescue arrived. He had been hit quite badly and was unable to move. He was transported to Shakalaka Veterinary Clinic in Putatan where he was given a full checkup including an X-ray where it was discovered he had suffered a disjointed spinal cord rendering the poor dog unable to walk and several other small injuries.

Because of his inability to walk again, he would have to be fitted with wheels. A kind Samaritan has offered to pay for the wheels and Kelly, the informant who called for the rescue, is willing to adopt the dog.

This cruel and heartless person who knocked the dog down without a second thought for his injury, just because he is “only a stray”, should think twice because it is still a living being, and a gift from God.

We try to educate people to be caring and thoughtful towards living things, especially animals, but it is really disappointing that many are still callous and cud not care less!

Unfortunately, our State is full of people who are ignorant of the care and love of dogs and cats and the government does nothing to enforce this issue!  As it has been stressed before, if you have injured a dog/cat in a hit and run, try to bring the animal to a clinic or call a rescue team for help and offer to pay for the costs or at least, part of it.

The motorcyclist could have asked for help after he had injured a living thing, a precious life!

Please do not think dogs and cats are unimportant. Their lives are just as precious as yours and your loved ones. They feel what humans feel, too; pain, sadness, joy, love etc.

Because of human selfishness and uncaring attitude, they become strays through no fault of their own. Humans can make choices, but dogs/cats do not.

Have a heart please, spare a thought for the strays.

Do not harm animals! Reminder: do not allow your dogs out.
