NEUTERING (for males) and spaying (for females) is very beneficial for your pet but we will just call this procedure neutering. It renders them sterile and by this token, there will be no unwanted litters.

In Asia, it is a common occurrence for litters to be dumped or abandoned with no thought for the lives and/or safety of the babies or the mama, if she is abandoned with her newborn kittens/puppies. Even by giving them away, it does not guarantee them safety. As such the best solution is to neuter your pet!

It is sad there are not enough homes or people who will adopt a stray/puppy or moggie (local cat) as they are also known, and sadly, many people will clamour to own a pedigree like a Persian, Rottweiler etc.

However, a pedigree needs more love and care than most people realise and of course they need the good expensive food too whereas a local breed is much cheaper to maintain and they are of course more hardy, though of course they will need their deworming and vaccinations too!

These local breeds are just as clever (if not cleverer) than pedigrees. Local breeds are also smart and of course cheaper to maintain. Besides neutering your pet, be it a cat or a dog, will give it a healthier and longer life! By neutering your pet it will also prevent unwanted litters from being dumped!

Benefits of neutering/spaying

Prevents Diseases: After neutering your pet it will reduce the chances of your pet contracting cancer

Do keep in mind, however, of other cat diseases like cat leukaemia and FelV (feline aids). Now, before u panic, feline Aids cannot be transmitted to humans so please stop worrying!

Reduces Fights: An unnneutered male cat is driven by hormones to seek mates and also to defend its territory and fights tend to break out especially when there is a female cat in heat nearby. It’s natural instinct. As such if your cat is neutered (both male and female) it is definitely better and safer for both sexes!

Reduces roaming/wandering: When a female cat is in heat her instincts urge her to roam/wander outside to seek a mate. As such when your door is left ajar it will take the opportunity to go outside! By neutering your male and female cats it will cut down their wanderlust and they will be happy to stay home with you.

Cleaner home: Just like dogs, male cats like to spray their urine on walls to mark their territory to warn other male cats that it’s his space. By neutering him it reduces the urge to spray everywhere!

By the same token female cats also have bodily fluids which emit a scent to males. Therefore, by spaying the female cat will eliminate the same problem

Will my cat be different after neutering?

Probably not. Your cat should be the same cat it was before neutering, that you have always known and loved

It is likely to be rounder and will probably gain some weight but make sure it stays a healthy weight

Neutered dogs

Your puppy should also be neutered when at least 6 months old and before 12 months. A neutered dog is much healthier and happier at home and they usually behave better too! A neutered dog will not get cancer and in the long run you will save money and prevent overpopulation and also dumping and abandonment

It is important to neuter your dog/cat. It is recommended that cats be neutered between five to six months while a dog nine and 15 months depending on its size. Your vet would be the best person to advice u on this

Remember: A neutered pet is a happy, healthy pet!
