Rachel
THIS week we have an interview with the lovely and popular DJ Rachel B who is originally from Sabah and who is also an animal lover. Because of her love for dogs and cats, she donated to animal shelters, who are very grateful for her kindness

How did you get started as a dj & what’s the secret to your success? how did you feel doing your  first gig?

A: I started as a DJ back in 2013 because I enjoy mixing my own songs for my dance choreography use. However, as soon as I learned more about DJ-ing and  what a DJ’s work involved,  I found it very challenging and that’s when I decided to give it a try. I was very nervous. At my first gig, and even now when I think of it , after so long, it still makes me shiver to recall my first appearance as a DJ! To me the secret to success is all about how much  passion and  time you spend in preparation, and studying the details in order to give your audience the best and most enjoyable night!

What made you decide to donate to animal shelters?

A: I am an animal lover; I love dogs and cats! They can’t speak for themselves when they are in pain or suffering: so I hope to use my position and influence to speak for them, the voiceless innocents. That is why I want to do my best for the strays while I have the chance  in my position and hope to influence others to follow my example.

Do you own any pets at home?

A: Unfortunately, no, I don’t due to my work commitments and schedules. Animals; they need our time, love, care and  commitment. So I prefer  not to adopt one if I have no time for them. They are just like kids to me and like kids, they need our dedicated love and commitment to look after them!

What do you think of the dog/cat situation in sabah as a whole?

A: For the past few years I’ve been involved in charity work helping the needy, both humans and animals alike, and I’ve noticed  there are lots of animal lovers out there who are really committed and big hearted! But I noticed too that many of the stray animals (ie fur kids) are also abandoned by their owners when these poor dogs/cats have  sickness or imperfections.  Thst is a very cruel & selfish thing to do.

Any advice or suggestions on what we can do to improve it to make it better for animals and to discourage humans from harming/abusing/abandoning them?

A: Consider deeply from every angle: time, travel, financial devotion, all reasons why you want to own a pet dog/cat etc. Speak to other pet lovers to know more about the responsibilities/commitments involved before you decide to adopt; understand the specifications/responsibilities/commitments of love and care needed by the dog/cat and most important thing is make sure you doing it wholeheartedly because you want to, not because  your friends tell u it’s so cute etc.

What advice would you give to owners who are thinking by of abandoning their pets?

A: All life is precious, take it! be responsible! Just because an animal cannot speak human language,  doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings. They are living creatures too and feel what we humans feel. You may not love them but please don’t hurt them!

How can the public help grossly underfunded animal shelters more?

A:  Spend a dime; save a soul! No matter how small the amount the Shelters are always grateful!! Donate from the heart!

Humans always blame the poor dogs, especially when these dogs growl and sometimes snap at them. This is because these dogs have never known love &/or kindness and distrust humans. Who can blame them, under their circumstances as sometimes these dogs are just trying to protect their newborns or they rummage in bins because they are so hungry and thirsty. Often people forget to give strays water but water is most important to them!! What advice can u give to humans in their treatment of the poor strays?

A: Animals are generally not life threatening unless they feel their lives are being threatened or their lives are in danger. Their defence mechanism  is triggered when they feel harm is around. Everyone, even us human has a zone. So if you are not approaching with a good motive, animals can sense it. Please just stay away and keep your distance. If you wish to approach a dog/cat, please make sure you do it the correct way.

you’ve been very kind & generous towards dogs & cats in shelters. what spurred you to help them?

A: To me, It’s all about love and compassion. They are just so adorable.

How can we change the situation to make it better for dogs & cats?

A: Dogs & cats are beautiful animals and humans should not harm them because as I said above, they are voiceless and it is up to us humans to show them love and compassion!!

What would you advice your fans (re dogs & cats) as some may not like animals?

A: If you’re already a  pet owner, please do not give up on them for their imperfections; love them unconditionally as they love you. If you’re not a pet owner; please do consider adopting  from any shelter; do not buy. And do remember: think twice before you own a pet.  It is a lifetime commitment.

As you know, shelters are in desperate need of funding as well as land to have a proper shelter. Would you and your fans be able to help to this end as some of these shelters are subject to severe flooding?

A: Public funding is always the best way to get things done. But in  my case my team and I are still not ready for it due to other commitments, but in the near future we will certainly do our part to help these dogs and cats.
