THE views of Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah (Daily Express on June 12, 2022) is an outline what democracy provided since its inception.

There are only a few countries of the 184 that actually practise democracy as outlined. These days people are manipulated by money.

Just take the United States of America, at every election, billions of dollars are spent to convince voters to vote for the Democratic or Republican Party or candidate.

Money corrupts voters’ minds and decisions. This is the meaning of democracy. Those elected will make billions of dollars while in office. Malaysian Constitution has been amended over a hundred times. These include the basic principles of democracy.

There is nothing remaining in the constitution that will stop the government of the day from implementing anything that will work in their favour.

The voters just go along with their hero “worshipping” as long as there is money for enticing. These include the mostly educated Malaysian voters. Overwhelmingly, the majority of Sabah and Sarawak voters are both economically and “civilly” far behind west Malaysian voters.

Thus, leaders of Sabah and Sarawak have a free hand in retaining their power indefinitely. This is the “rule” of the day.

Money politics in Malaysia these days run into millions of ringgit. Just to capture a divisional head need RM5 to RM10 millions.

To win a Member of Parliament seat will set you back between RM10 to RM25 million. The erosion of democracy in Malaysia has been in all sectors of the government.

Any law or amendment to the constitution must be endorsed by the Conference of Rulers and or by the Yang DiPertuan Agong.

Therefore, without consent of the Conference of Rulers or Yang DiPertuan Agong, no law or amendment to the Constitution can be made.

The Malaysian Constitution has undergone more amendments since the 2014 general election. The Federal Government has conceded to everything demanded by Sabah and Sarawak.  The two third Partners and the Malaysia Agreement was incorporated into the Constitution. That was all. The Administration continue as usual with all the 11 peninsular states.

Someone should carry out a study to find out what percentage of Malaysian democratic rights has eroded in the past 60 years.
