Kota Kinabalu: There is a need for serious consideration of talent development and to enhance the creative industry, said Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (Scenic) General Manager Viviantie Sarjuni.

Scenic Creative Academy (SCA), which manages both creative programmes and talent development in Sabah, saw the first batch of 10 students secure job placement even before the academy’s inaugural graduation ceremony here, recently, launched by Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary II Alijah Ismail.

The students participated in a six-month Toon Boom Industrial Bridging Programme (IBP) that equipped them with industrial knowledge in Toon Boom animation softwares.

“As a result of this programme under SCA, 100 per cent of the participants secured jobs with world-class studios.

“Sabah is home to many talented individuals and they require support to sustain the growth of the industry. Thus, it is imperative that we expand this to reach a larger group,” she said.

Viviantie added that the academy is underway to secure funding from corporations and the government to support the programme and provide more benefits to Sabah’s creative talents.

To be selected into the programme, Eva Chris who leads the Scenic Creative Chamber pillars said applicants would need to go through a selection process and attend a test.

“As the programmes are subsidised and incentives provided to participants, SCA will be very strict on the selection process.

“Only selected applicants with qualified skills will be joining the programme.

“In order to be certified as Toon Boom animator, participants will need to complete all the modules in the programmes and deliver all the assignments.”

Natraya Aliya Nustapha, 27, from Kota Kinabalu and was studying at Unimas previously, said the IBP programme helped her to learn new skills and gain more experience.

“As I had no prior experience in this field, it was rather challenging. But as I practised more and more, it became quite an exciting challenge.

“Like any other jobs, each task requires us to be able to problem solve and I think it has helped me to think more critically and efficiently.”

After the programme, Almyron Michael, 35, freelance animator from Kota Kinabalu, said he wants to learn about character acting, level up his drawing skills, and also gain more experience in the whole animation pipeline.

The ceremony, which was held at Lot 12, Scenic, Ready Built Factory Fasa 5 (RBF5) at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) near here, also witnessed the exchange of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Scenic, Inspidea and OLMA.

The MoU sought collaboration from both sides whereby Scenic would provide animation talents while Inspidea and OLMA would provide job opportunities and industrial training.
