Government mulling hiring assistants to reduce workload of teachers

Deputy education minister Lim Hui Ying said the ministry was encouraging teachers to continue their service until their mandatory retirement at the age of 60.
Deputy education minister Lim Hui Ying said the ministry had also implemented seven measures to immediately reduce teachers’ workload during the current school year.
She said this included ending competitions, celebrations or ceremonies which did not have a major impact on student learning.
Other measures include opening up the appointment of public examination invigilators to those other than serving teachers, such as government retirees and students from the Institute of Teacher Education or other institutions of higher learning.
“Another step is to limit organising the annual Teacher’s Day (celebration) to only the national and school level,” she said.
Lim was replying to a question from Senator Arman Azha Abu Hanifah about the ministry’s measures to resolve excessive teacher workload, which Arman said had resulted in numerous early retirements.
Lim said while early retirements would reduce the number of experienced teachers, the ministry “cannot force them to continue serving”.
“But the ministry will try its best to encourage teachers to continue teaching until their mandatory retirement at the age of 60,” she said.
