KENINGAU: Keningau Vocational College student Alesyah Asa, who was the first Malaysian to be in the top 10 finalist for the 2022 Global Student Prize, was recently awarded best overall student at the national level for the Vocational College Convocation on March 11 at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Negeri Sembilan.

Alesyah, a student majoring in Construction Technology in the college, received the most prestigious award for vocational college students in Malaysia, the Education Minister Gold Award, during the convocation ceremony of the Ministry of Education Vocational College for 2022 graduates.

The award is given to the best student overall among all vocational colleges in Malaysia, according to College Head of Research and Innovation, Dr Sirhajwan Idek.

He said the convocation, which took place from March 6 to 11, was held at the Tuanku Chancellor’s Hall, USIM and was also attended by the Minister of Education and the Deputy Minister of Education.

Alesyah received the award as the best student of the educational technology programme at the national level on March 6 before being awarded as the overall best student of the vocational college a few days later by the Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek.

"She received a plaque, a certificate and cash amounting to RM3,000. Alesyah has forged many achievements and one of her biggest successes is being the first Malaysian to be named a top 10 finalist for the Global Student Prize in 2022.

"She also led her school team to win a hackathon organised by Unesco in 2020 and received a STEM grant amounting to four thousand from the Awesome Foundation in the same year.

"Alesyah also participated in a student exchange programme in South Korea in 2019," said Sirhajwan.

The director of the college, Christine Stanislaus Kinsik, expressed her pride in the achievement of this student, who managed to be the best example to other vocational college students not only because of her achievements but also because of her morals, discipline and friendly and helpful nature.
