Kuala Lumpur: Following the encouraging response to last year’s Taiwanese Halal Food Cooking Contest, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) was once again commissioned by Taiwan’s Bureau of Foreign Trade to hold the 2nd Taiwanese Halal Food Cooking Contest during Taiwan Expo 2023.

Similar to the event held last year, the contest this year will bring together the best of Taiwanese halal ingredients, celebrity chef judges, and the youthful creativity of student contestants.

The organizer is honoured to welcome international celebrity Master Chef Mohd Johari Edrus (Chef Jo); as well as Chef Riz, the star chef at a BIB Gourmand Michelin Award restaurant, to serve as judges.

Students from the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Wellness; and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Department of Food Service and Management will be vying for the crown this year.

Halal plant-based meat was featured as the main ingredient in last year's contest and the versatile ingredients inspired the students to create many interesting dishes.

The organizer decided to up the ante this year with 25 halal ingredients from 10 Taiwanese companies.

Seafood ingredients include seafood salad and halibut steak from YENS, canned tuna and fish floss from Huikun.

Vegetable based ingredients include vegan meat floss from No Meating, pumpkin vegetable diet from King Kung, rice cracker from Dong Yuan, and sweet potato chips from K.K. Orchard.

As for the sauces and condiments, there is the special hot sauce from Pao Chung, ripe honey from Dudujia Honey, wasabi sauce from S&G, as well as brine and spices from Jofont.

These outstanding ingredients and the creative minds of the students will no doubt lead to many interesting appetizers, soups and main dishes that bring together the best of Malaysian and Taiwanese flavours, and a groundbreaking halal food exchange.

The culinary competition is scheduled for the 26th of August at 11am at the TAIWAN EXPO in KLCC.

Visitors are welcomed to attend to show their support for the students as well as enjoy the chance to sample delicious Taiwanese winter melon tea from Forever Sweety, the hugely popular 3:15pm Milk Tea from Shih Chen, lotus root almond drink from King Kung, and healthy enzyme drink from Biozyme.

Come experience the exciting competition and tickle your tastebuds at the same time.
