KUNAK: Visitors to the picturesque Pangi coastal area in Kunak can access three popular recreational sites, thanks to newly-installed signboards along the main Kunak-Semporna road.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Kunak District Tourism and Culture Association in collaboration with Sabah Tourism Board, aims to boost rural tourism and promote the district’s natural attractions.

The signboards direct travellers to Sarinah Beach, Darvel Lagoon, and Farfiq Sparkle, which have become prime destinations for both locals and tourists seeking a seaside and beach atmosphere.

Sarinah Beach is located 2km from the main junction, while Darvel Lagoon and Farfiq Sparkle are 1.5km and 1.7km away, respectively.

According to Mohd Hata Arabi, Chairman of the Kunak Tourism Association, these recreational areas are managed by local entrepreneurs and have garnered interest from visitors seeking to experience the district’s coastal charm and catch glimpses of surrounding islands from the highlands.

“We hope the rural tourism industry continues to attract visitors, and at the same time, recreational operators also play a role in ensuring the safety aspects and attractions at each popular location are well-maintained,” Hata said.

While promoting the district’s tourism potential, the association remains vigilant about safety concerns, including potential risks from reptile encounters along the seaside, although no such incidents have been reported thus far.

“We always take proactive steps to ensure visitor safety is a priority, such as addressing unforeseen risks,” Hata said, highlighting the association’s commitment to providing a secure and enjoyable experience for tourists.

In addition to enhancing accessibility, the Kunak Tourism Association plans to support various initiatives to further promote the district’s tourist locations.

This includes collaborating with the Kunak KDCA during cultural events like the Kaamatan festival, where visits by Unduk Ngadau participants to these recreational sites could showcase the area’s diverse tourism offerings.
