SANDAKAN: A total of 80 abandoned vehicles were identified in the Kampung Sim Sim area during an inter-agency inspection led by Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee on Thursday.
The joint inspection involved the police, Road Transport Department, Sandakan Municipal Council, Sabah Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board and representatives from the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre, including Council Member Tang Szu Ching.
According to Vivian, the inspection found that many of the vehicles had been left unattended for a long time where some were in a state of disrepair, while others were being used as makeshift storage units.
“This situation not only blocks public parking spaces meant for active community use but also poses risks to public cleanliness and health.
“Public parking is meant for communal use. When misused, it deprives others of access, encourages overgrowth, and becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” she said.
The Sandakan Municipal Council informed that removal notices had been issued to the vehicle owners several weeks ago, but most were ignored.
As a result, new guidelines will be introduced, including enforcement action against non-compliant owners.
JPJ will also issue summonses for illegally parked commercial vehicles, while LPKP will take appropriate action for any identified violations.
Vivian also called on the public to report any abandoned or derelict vehicles found in other public areas by sending photos and information to the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre via WhatsApp at 010-807 3313 for further action.
“We appreciate the cooperation of all involved agencies and hope that efforts like this will help beautify the surroundings and maintain public order for the wellbeing of Sandakan residents,” she added.
