Kundasang: It is time Kundasang is made a tourism sub-district, said Kundasang Ranau Tourism and Culture Association Kundasang, Chairman Datuk Japiril Suhaimin.
“Recently, Sook was upgraded to a full district. If Kundasang eventually becomes a full district, it will bring about major changes in various aspects.
“Many benefits will be enjoyed by Kundasang residents, including in administration, development, and community well-being if upgraded to a sub-district,” he said.
He said Kundasang will enjoy increased autonomy and management and once it becomes full district, it will have its own District Council, which can plan development, maintain the area, and control economic activities more efficiently.

Japiril said greater administrative power allow for long-term planning that is more in line with the uniqueness of Kundasang, such as ecological preservation in hilly areas.
In addition, Kundasang will also receive greater financial allocations, allowing for more development projects such as road rehabilitation, clean water, and new health centres.
“Investment in the tourism sector also has the potential to increase, strengthening Kundasang as a major tourism destination in Sabah,” he said.
In terms of public infrastructure, Kundasang can get more facilities such as schools, clinics and community centres.
On tourism facilities, there would be more hotels, resorts, and tourist-friendly activities that can be developed to attract more visitors.
“Kundasang is known for its agricultural produce such as vegetables and fruits. Full district status will increase technical support and market access for local farmers.
“In terms of employment opportunities, with more development projects, local employment opportunities for the people of Kundasang will increase.”
He said the development must also encompass Bundu Tuhan, Perancangan, Timbua and Ulu Sugut.
Meanwhile, he said, there are also several potential challenges that arise from the upgrade but they are all part of the normal development parcel.
