Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) urged both the State and Federal governments to strengthen the Sabah Malaysia My Second Home (Sabah-MM2H), infrastructure development, housing policies and investment incentives to boost Sabah’s property and economic growth.

Its President Datuk Johnny Wong Chen Yee said Shareda’s mission has always been clear – to work hand in hand with the State Government to strengthen our economy and create opportunities for our people.

Speaking at the annual 47th Shareda Nite 2025 he said this year’s theme, “Affinity”, reflects the spirit of collaboration, trust, and connection between developers, government agencies, and communities working towards Sabah’s shared future.

“One of the ways forward is through the (Sabah-MM2H) programme as it is a key driver for economic expansion.

“By enhancing this initiative, the program could attract more investors, increase capital inflow, generate employment and create positive spinoffs for Sabah’s economy and fostering an investment-friendly environment,” he said.

At the same time, Johnny stressed the need for continuous improvements in core infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity, describing them as these are foundations that open up more available land for development, which in turn stimulates private sector participation.

“When infrastructure grows, opportunities multiply, and together, we can drive stronger, more sustainable economic progress for Sabah,” he added.

In moving forward, he said Shareda remains committed to delivering affordable housing for all Sabahans and called for government support through initiatives like the “Federal Government’s Skim Jaminan Kredit Perumahan” (SJKP) to help first-time buyers secure loans.

“We appeal for a special allocation of this fund (SJKP) specifically for Sabah, as local bank branches here often face delays in obtaining approval from their headquarters.

“This would help ensure that Sabah homebuyers can access the fund before it is fully utilised elsewhere,” he said.

In addition, Johnny also proposed that the State Government allocate suitable land to private developers to construct affordable homes, ensuring both quality and affordability while helping more Sabahans achieve home ownership.

“This year’s Shareda Nite also featured a charitable component through a fundraising initiative for the Sabah Autism Society.

“This gesture reflects the association’s belief that true development is not only about what we build, but about the lives we touch along the way.

“Autism touches many families in our community, and the Society has been a beacon of care, education, and empowerment,” he said while inviting attendees to contribute generously.

In line with sustainable development goals (SDG) to embrace green and sustainable growth, Johnny said Shareda had officially signed up with GreenRE and appointed DME Consultant as the sole coordinator for the association’s green initiative.

As part of this collaboration, he said DME Consultant will offer an initial consultation worth about RM5,000 to help developers understand and achieve Green Certification for their projects.

“A strong economy must also be a sustainable one. This is a valuable step forward in promoting responsible and resilient growth for Sabah.”

Johnny also emphasised the essence of “Affinity’ lies in relationships, shared purpose and mutual trust.

“Let us continue to work together – to build not just developments, but a better, greener, and more united Sabah for generations to come,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shareda Deputy President cum the event’s Organising Chairman Benny Ng Su Pei said Shareda celebrated its annual Shareda Nite 2025 with a call for unity, innovation, and social responsibility in shaping the future of Sabah’s property industry.

He said this year’s gala brought together developers, government leaders, and industry partners to honour achievements, recognize outstanding contributions, and raise funds for charity.

“Tonight, we gather not only to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our industry, but also to share in fellowship, generosity, and vision for the future.

“Development is not only about buildings and spaces, but about communities, lives, and futures,” he said in his welcoming speech in the event.

Benny said Shareda Nite 2025 paid tribute to industry pioneers and recognised developers who have raised the bar in design and sustainability.

Reflecting on the evolution of the property sector, Benny said that the industry had transformed significantly over the past two decades.

“What was once an industry defined by brick and mortar over the past two decades, has now transformed into a field shaped by sustainability, technology, innovation, and inclusivity.

“We are not only business persons and builders, but we are experts in the built environment and in communities.

“To succeed today is not to merely construct buildings — but to create meaningful ecosystems, spaces that inspire, and developments that embody responsibility to both people and the planet,” he said.

He said that modern developers must view themselves not only as builders but as creators of communities and ecosystems that inspire and uphold environmental and social responsibility.

Benny also urged the industry to attract and nurture young talents, saying the next generation would be crucial in sustaining innovation and purpose-driven development.

“The property industry cannot thrive on experience alone; it needs the creativity, values, and passion of the younger generations.

“Our duty is to build not just for profit, but for legacy — and that legacy requires the hearts and minds of those who see this industry as a calling, not just a career,” he said.

Benny thanked all members, partners, and guests for their continued support and reaffirmed Shareda’s mission to advance the industry through collaboration, innovation and compassion.
