WITH Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) fast approaching, students are busy preparing for the most important examination in secondary school.

The year 2021 was challenging to everyone, including students, teachers and parents.

This is to say schools have been hugely affected by the pandemic that has been going on for almost two years now.

Although all schools are expected to start this week, many students would have forgotten about normal schooling. The norm, so far, has been  “Home Schooling.”

However, those who are sitting for the SPM in March would have observed the subject packages offered by their schools.

Hence, they would be sitting for the SPM examination based on the subject package they had chosen.

To refresh your mind, here are the Key facts about the subject packages which was introduced before the Covid-19 pandemic:
  • The Core subjects for all students are Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History and Islamic Studies/Moral education
  • Physical and Health Education is a compulsory subject for all
  • Students  would have chosen  from electives in four categories: languages, Islamic studies, humanities and arts, and STEM
  • STEM electives are further divided into: pure science, applied science and technology, and vocational subjects.
  • There are 38 elective subjects for STEM category (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
  • There are 53 elective subjects for Humanities & Arts category

Schools are given autonomy in providing elective subjects, taking into account school facilities and the availability of teachers for subjects offered

Students who take any two pure science subjects are exempted from taking the core Science subject.

Please ensure that you are sitting for the right paper. If you are not sure, please check with your school.
