Third Chinese Test as Foreign Language at Kian Kok July 23

Kota Kinabalu: The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Education Division (Teco), in collaboration with Kian Kok Middle School and the Taiwan Alumni Association of Sabah will be organising the Third Chinese Test as Foreign Language (TOCFL) on July 23.

The test will be held for the first time at Kian Kok Middle School and the online registration for TOCFL will be open from June 7-17. 

In an online meeting attended by Charlin Chang, the Education Director of Teco, Goh Teck Seng, Principal of Kian Kok Middle School and Pang Thou Chong, the President of the Taiwan Alumni Association of Sabah, the organiser announced the launch of the online registration for TOCFL Sabah and encourage students and the public to register. 

Charlin said this is the first time for TOCFL to be conducted in east Malaysia, and it marks a milestone in further promoting Chinese culture and Mandarin. 

She expressed her gratitude to the Kian Kok Middle School and the Taiwan Alumni Association of Sabah for the dedication and efforts that have contributed to organizing the test.

She said the TOCFL acts as a useful and standardized assessment tool for Huayu proficiency levels which corresponds with CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines. 

She encourages students who are currently learning Mandarin in international schools, language centres, and tuition centres to sit TOCFL in order to assess their Mandarin proficiency level. 

She also highlighted that there are more than 60 university-affiliated Mandarin Language Centres in Taiwan, offering various Mandarin programmes and related resources which are suitable for all kinds of Mandarin learners. Students are encouraged to grasp the opportunity to learn Mandarin in Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Goh said the school always emphasises and supports diverse learning, the Chinese language is increasingly important and becoming a global language, and we encourage students from different ethnic to learn more languages to gain a competitive advantage and those who are fluent in Chinese to obtain a TOCFL test certificate as proof of their language proficiency.

Pang on the other hand said that the association is devoted to promoting talent cultivation in Sabah in combination with Taiwan’s educational trends. 

By co-organising the TOCFL, they hope to encourage Sabah students to obtain professionally recognised certification of Chinese language proficiency. Students from all levels and the public are welcome to apply for the exam.

Deputy Assistant Director of Education Division Alice Chen said that there are three bands for TOCFL Listening and Reading test, which are Band A, Band B, and Band C, and both simplified and traditional Mandarin test papers are available for each band. 

Candidates who pass the test will receive a certificate from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan which can be used as a reference document for the Chinese Language Proficiency Level for university applications or job hunting. 

The TOCFL certificate can also serve as proof of Chinese proficiency for applying for a Taiwan Scholarship and obtaining bonus points under the new appraisal system for Overseas Chinese and international students who want to remain in Taiwan to work.

Candidates shall register via online registration form: https://tocfl.sc-top.org.tw/zoom/. For group registration with 10 individuals and above, each individual will enjoy a 10 per cent discount.
