Kota Kinabalu: Politeknik Tunku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) dethroned defending champions Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) to take the overall title in the Malaysian Polytechnics Sports Council Athletics Championship which concluded here at Politeknik Kota Kinabalu in Sepanggar on Sunday.They won a total of 10 golds, two silvers and one bronze to top the medal tally followed by Politeknik Ungku Omar with six golds, 11 silvers and eight bronzes.Third place went to Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (Polisas) with four golds, fours silvers and four bronzes while the hosts finished in fourth place with three golds, six silvers and two bronzes.The best male athlete award went to Lau Jit Sung from PUO who broke the record in the triple jump event while the female award was won by PTSB's Teoh Kim Chi who rewrote three meet records in the 800m, 3,000m and 1,500m and in the 4x 400 relay.

A total of nine new records were set and the other achievers were Nurizah Abdullah Politeknik Banting (PBS) in the women high jump, Teoh Kim Leng (PTSB) in the women 400m, Polisas men's 4 x 100 relay team, PTSB 4 x 400 relay team and the men's 4 x 400 relay team from Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS).261 athletes with 57 officials from 23 polytechnics throughout the country took part in the two-day event which is held biennially.

Deputy general director of polytechnic education Shabudin Man was the guest of honour for the closing ceremony and also present was Politeknik Kota Kinabalu Director Zainab Othman. – GL Oh
