First post box at 3,289m on Mt Kinabalu
RANAU: Pos Malaysia Berhad (Pos Malaysia) on Saturday made it into the Malaysia Book of Records after launching its first post box on Mt Kinabalu. The post box, which is incidentally Pos Malaysia's 3,110th, was installed 3,289 metres above sea level at Pendant Hut, Laban Rata, on Feb 8.

Communication and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said Pos Malaysia's Mt Kinabalu post box is comparably as high up as those at Mt Fuji, Japan and Jungfrau Swiss Alps, Switzerland.

The post box would be a new product to draw tourists, and promote Malaysia's highest mountain through specially postmarked postcards, he told reporters after launching the post box service here.

He said the postcard could also potentially become a collector's item for philately enthusiasts.

Pos Malaysia acting Group CEO Azlan Shahrim said climbers and tourists alike would have the unique and delightful experience of sending postcards or letters from Mt Kinabalu.

He said a postman would be assigned to go up and collect the letters and postcards from the post box at 12 noon every working day.

"A Pos Malaysia van would send the letters and postcards to the office of Mountain Torq, a Pos Malaysia licensed agent at 10am the following day, to be processed at the Ranau Post Office," he said.

Azlan said more than 100 postcards were posted through the Mt Kinabalu post box the very day it was installed.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Book of Records representative, Zulhairi Mat Zin, confirmed and declared the Pendant Hut post box as the highest altitude post box in Malaysia.

Pendant Hut lodging is located about six kilometres from the Timpohon Gate and situated approximately at the intersection between the main climbing route and of the Via-Ferratta route.

Also present at the event were Director of MCMC Sabah and Labuan Region, K Jusely Ellis and Sabah Parks Chairman Dato Seri Tengku Zainal Adlin Tengku Mahamood.
