Agroponics farming may be included in small industry programme
Agroponics farming may be included in the One District One Small Industry (OD1SI) programme, said Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong (pic).

Welcoming such proposal by Pitas Assemblyman Datuk Bolkiah Ismail in the State Legislative Assembly sitting Monday, he said the Ministry is co-operating with the Trade and Industry Ministry to further develop agroponics farming in the State.

“The Ministry is working closely with the Trade and Industry Ministry (MTI) as we are on the upstream while they are on the downstream,” he said.

“I think the suggestion (including agroponics farming in the OD1SI) is good.”

Earlier, Junz said agroponics farming is a capital-intensive venture while the market is still low as the price is higher than conventional farming produces.

“To date, they are only 25 entrepreneurs who are actively involved in agroponics farming in the State.”

For the introduction of agroponics farming technology, the Agriculture Department has provided an infrastructure and facility at the Putatan Permanent Food Production Park and Mesilou, Kundasang, starting 2018.

Priority, he said, is given to youths and graduates in the State.

As for aquaponics system, there are 18 entrepreneurs in the State who ventured into it.

Junz also said among the efforts to help increase the number of aquaponics entrepreneurs is by introducing the system to existing aquaculture operators.

“Apart form that, a public exhibition on aquaponics was also held during the Young Agropreneur Programme in Lahad Datu where some 250 people attended.

“Such exhibitions will also be done in other districts,” he said.

Additionally, he said, the Agriculture Department has been active in providing training and workshops for interested parties.

“Assistance in terms of equipment is also provided for potential entrepreneurs.”

This year, he said, two entrepreneurs, one each from Kota Marudu and Keningau, were assisted through the Ministry’s special programme.
