‘Datin’ hurt in snatch theft

Kota Kinabalu: A woman in her 60s sustained slight injuries in a snatch theft near Lintas Superstore, Jalan Kolam, Tuesday.It was learnt that the woman, who is a ‘Datin’ arrived at the supermarket in her Mercedes at about 11.30am. She alighted from the car after parking at a space behind it, and was walking towards the premises when her handbag was snatched from behind. The impact caused her to fall, injuring her right arm in the process. The Datin, who is co-founder of a Buddhist association here sought treatment at a hospital. It was believed that the snatch thief who came on a motorcycle with an accomplice, had tailed her as she was driving into the area. A commotion ensued as the Datin shouted for help, prompting an ice cream delivery team to rush to her aid. Two supermarket patrons also jumped in to assist, resulting in the thief to be captured. The Datin’s handbag was also recovered with the capture of the snatch thief.  The accomplice, however, managed to escape. The thief when apprehended, claimed to have come from Kudat and he did what he did because he needed money to buy food. Meanwhile, the premises manager, known only as Sari, 38, said this was the first such incident to have taken place during his 13 years working there. He alerted the police before lodging a police report on the incident. The incident was also captured by CCTV installed at the premises.
