Sembulan water mains found tampered
Treated water was oozing out from beneath the metal box which covered a section of the blue-coloured main pipe at Sembulan recently.
THE Water Department has sealed the leakage point of the blue water mains at the roadside near the fish market in Jalan Sembulan on Oct 21.

The authority’s contractor was instructed to overcome the problem after it was discovered that the air valve for the pipe was damaged, likely to have been tampered with by an irresponsible individual in that area.

A member of the public who saw precious treated water gushing out wastefully, while on his way to Penampang immediately contacted Hotline about it. A Department spokesman, when contacted, said it had done some measures to prevent the pipe from sustaining similar damage again in future.

“We will also keep an eye on that main pipe from time to time, especially in the evening to discourage anyone from attempting to make an illegal connection,” he added.

He said the offence is punishable under Section 49(b) and Section 53 of the Sabah Water Supply Enactment 2003 which carries a fine of up to RM 50,000 or two years’ imprisonment.

The Water Department urged the people there to comply with the enactment or face severe punishment if found guilty.

He also urged the public to alert them of thefts or leakages by contacting the Hotline at 088-326888.

RAY, the complainant, said the authority concerned could not afford to delay in attending to such a problem in light of the rampant water supply shut down at the treatment plants every time it rained heavily for a few hours due to high turbidity level at their raw water intake point.

“The villagers are greatly impacted whenever it happens because there will be no piped water for hours at home,” he added.

He also said the leakage had caused low water pressure at the nearby shops.

“Clean water is a priceless commodity especially for cleaning purposes during this pandemic time,” he added.   Meanwhile, the spokesman also said the leakage on their DMZ meter at Kampung Darau in Manggatal, which was brought to their attention earlier by Hotline, had been repaired as well.

A concerned villager there told Hotline that it was time to stop the leakage as it had been leaking for more than three months.

“You can see rust had formed at the metal cage of the meter because it had been exposed to water for so long,” said the complainant, who requested for anonymity.
