Kota Kinabalu: The State Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry is discussing with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on the prospect of using services offered by Measat.

Its Minister Datuk Yakubah Khan said this is to enable the people to have better access to information.

“My Ministry had discussed with some companies that could help to resolve some of the issues and improve the existing services for the people to access the Internet,” he said to a supplementary question by Kadamaian assemblyman Datuk Ewon Benedick during question time.

“I agree that there is a need to help students who do not have good Internet coverage (in their respective areas).”

Ewon had proposed for the government to collaborate with Measat to use their CONNECTme services.

CONNECTme is a satellite broadband plan offered by Measat with download speeds up to 25 Megabits per second (Mbps).

To a supplementary question by Nabawan assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin, Yakubah said, the Ministry and MCMC are aware of the problems faced by the people in the Interior.

“We will work hard to rectify the existing services and to increase the number of telecommunication towers in Sabah so that everyone can have Internet access,” he said.

Earlier, to a question by Segama assemblyman Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, he said, the Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela) plan announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Aug 29, will provide equal quality of digital access between urban and rural areas.

The digital infrastructure improvement plan is going to be implemented in phases.

Among the targets for the first phase are an increase from 4.95 million premises to 7.5 million premises obtaining gigabit-speed fixed line broadband access, a 4G mobile broadband coverage expansion from 91.8 per cent to 96.9 per cent in populated areas, and to enhance the mobile broadband average speed from 25Mbps to 35Mbps.

He said, Muhyiddin had also announced that Sabah is the biggest beneficiary to Jendela.

“To expand the fibre optics network, some 190,115 premises will be provided with gigabit-speed fixed line broadband services.

“For mobile broadband services, some 423 new towers will be built, while 2,221 existing communication transmitters will be upgraded to 4G technology. These initiatives will be implemented in stages beginning this year until 2022,” he said.
