Kota Kinabalu: The traditional annual Chinese New Year Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Festival will not be held for the first time this year due to the spike in Covid-19 cases.

It is normally held one week before the Chinese New Year celebration and would also see the cancellation of the Chinese Cultural Village Exhibition, according to United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu (USCCAKK) President Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen on Monday.

“Although Chinese New Year celebration is very important for the Chinese communities, for the sake of public health and safety, we’ve decided to make this tough decision,” said Wong.

She reminded the people to continue to adhere to the Movement Control Order 2.0 and follow the standard operating procedures at all times to flatten the curve.

The unfolding of the Covid-19 has also saw USCCAKK deciding to cancel the Gaya Street Mid-Autumn Lantern Mooncake Festival last October, she added.

Although the programmes were cancelled, Wong asked Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the State Government to maintain the annual allocations for the USCCAKK so that they could use it for organising other Chinese cultural activities.
