Schools to reopen in stages from Sept 1

PETALING JAYA: Schools across the country will resume face-to-face classes in stages from Sept 1, the education ministry announced today.
In a statement, the ministry said that 253,366 teachers and administrators (61.30%) and 10,876 support staff (46.33%) had received at least one vaccine dose as of yesterday.

“Taking this vaccination rate into account, the ministry has decided that schools can open in stages for face-to-face learning from Sept 1.
“The ministry will continue to take into account risk assessments by the health ministry and National Security Council (MKN) to see if there is a need to change those dates.”
The Covid-19 pandemic forced schools to open for less than half of last year, with teachers and students both replacing face-to-face lessons with online learning.
This year, primary school students returned to school in March and secondary school students resumed their classes in April.

However, a spike in cases in May saw schools close their doors once again.
Based on the national recovery plan (NRP) announced by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin recently, the education sector will be allowed to operate in stages during the third phase — which is expected at the end of August.

According to the NRP, the country will enter the third phase when three threshold values are met — the average daily Covid-19 cases drop below the 2,000 mark, ICU capacity is at a “comfortable” level, and at least 40% of the population is fully vaccinated.
