MPs must submit SDs by 4pm tomorrow to nominate new PM
Kuala Lumpur: Each Member of Parliament has been asked to submit a statutory declaration to nominate a name to be appointed as the country’s 9th Prime Minister, according to a notice signed by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

The notice, dated Aug 17, was issued following the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.

“In carrying out Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree, I hereby issue a notice to every MP to submit a statutory declaration to clearly nominate one MP who has their confidence to be appointed as the 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia,” the notice read.

The statutory declarations must be submitted to Istana Negara by 4 pm tomorrow at the latest or will not be taken into account.

Azhar said this was in line with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution which stated that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has to appoint an MP, who in his judgment, is likely to command the confidence of the majority Members of Dewan Rakyat as prime minister.

“All MPs are reminded to maintain the confidentiality of the statutory declarations until the Yang di-Pertuan Agong made a decision,” he said.

He said the MPs were also not allowed to send the statutory declarations by hand to prevent the spread of COVID-19  since Istana Negara is located in an area under Phase One  of the National Recovery Plan.
