Jabs not for 17-year-olds yet: S’kan CITF
SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Covid-19 Immunisation Special Task Force (CITF) has denied announcing that 17-year-olds are called for inoculation at vaccination centres (PPVs) in the district here.Sandakan CITF Chairman cum Sandakan Municipal Council President, Wong Foo Tin, said this in response to a message circulated over Short Message Service (SMS) and Facebook regarding the matter. “The public is advised not to easily believe fake information or circulate information without authencity,” he said in a statement, here, Sunday. On the vaccination progress in the district, during a live radio interview with the Sandakanfm on Sunday, Wong invited residents aged 18 and above to go to any PPVs in the district.

He said six PPVs is opened to both citizens and foreigners, while the Hakka Hall PPV which is only for citizens will reopen starting from today (Sept 13). The six existing PPVs are PPV Dewan Masyarakat Bandar Sandakan, Pusat Aktiviti Pelajar SMJK Tiong Hua Batu 2, Dewan Yu Yuan Batu 4, Dewan Serbaguna Libaran Batu 7, Dewan Gum-Gum Batu 16 and PPV Dewan PPR Batu Sapi.

He also again refuted claims that foreigners who come for their vaccination will be detained by the authorities. As previously informed, the Special Identification given to them after receiving the vaccination is among others just to make it easier to identify whether they have been vaccinated or not.  He said all parties’ plays a role in ensuring Sandakan achieves herd immunity by October.  Sandakan is among the lowest ranked district along with seven other districts in Sabah in terms of first vaccine dose.  Currently, about 54 per cent of the population in Sandakan have received their first dose and is still slow.  There is an estimated 230,000 residents in Sandakan aged 18 and above eligible to be vaccinated while an estimated 130,000 foreigners are also eligible for the vaccination.  Wong estimates that about 130,000 citizens and 55,056 foreigners in the district who have been vaccinated, while 95,000 citizens and between 70,000 and 75,000 foreigners who have yet to be vaccinated. “We are also making Sandakan safe from infections and aim to have 70 per cent herd immunity by end of this month and 80 per cent herd immunity by end of October,” he said.  He said the CITF has also implemented outreach programmes to islands and remote villages in the district to enable residents to receive their vaccines.  Meanwhile, mobile PPVs were also opened in three villages in Sandakan – three days a week- namely in Kampung Tinosa 2, PPR Taman Harmoni and Kampung Sundang.

 As for the vaccination in Kg Bahagia, he said their five-day inoculation programme managed to administer 3,000 vaccine doses to the villagers.

 He also requests the cooperation of all parties including village heads and community leaders to work with the CITF to ensure the vaccination campaign progresses smoothly.
