Inanam folks worried hill might give way

City Hall will stabilise an Inanam hillside should it be located on one of its reserves. If it is, not then the responsibility will fall to whoever owns this property. This action was prompted by fears that a landslide might occur as rocks recently rolled down the slope when it rained heavily.

A rate-payer staying in the vicinity related his worries to Hotline. The location of his home was forwarded to City Hall. A spokesman for the agency’s Engineering Department said its staff had inspected the Inanam residence, shortly after learning about the debris coming away from the slope.

They noted the presence of boulders strewn about the compound at the time, according to him.

“Some of the big rocks had landed centimetres away from the back of the house and had damaged the concrete fence nearby as they fell,” he said.

He said City Hall personnel advised the rate-payer on the preventive measures that she could take to protect her property and her family.

“We are uncertain about the status of the land where the slope is and have enlisted the assistance from our Town Planning Department to determine if this is an open space or private property.”

Boulders and rocks tumbled down the slope when it rained for hours one night in September.

When asked whether the hillside could be partially covered with canvas sheets in the meantime, he said the cost of such temporary protection would have to be shouldered by whomever owned the land.

“If this proves to be government land, then we will have to look for funds to do this.

DANNY of Inanam said part of the hill overlooking his aunt’s house gave way at the beginning of September.

“We woke the next morning to find a pile of huge rocks just outside the back porch and that the fence here had been destroyed,” he said.

He said it had been raining particularly hard for several hours the night before. “We have experienced this kind of bad weather, on and off, in the weeks since and have worried that more of the hill might give way each time.” Danny said he and his aunt got the impression that the land on the other side of the slope was being developed.

“We have heard the sound of heavy machinery moving about and suspect that some reclamation work is taking place there.”

He wondered if the soil on the hillside might have somehow been loosened because of these activities.

The debris landed very close to the back porch of this Inanam house.

Danny said the safety of families living beside the hill would be at risk, if more of the land on the slope collapsed.

“I read in the media that a 25 year-old woman and five-year-old child died because of a landslide in the Bundusan area in the middle of September.”

“I hope the relevant authority will act to fortify the hillside before this happens here.”

He said his aunt had appealed to City Hall and a local politician for help.

“City Hall officers came a day after the rocks fell and YB Peto Galim did the same less than a week later,” Danny said.

“The Assemblyman hopes to host a friendly discussion between the homeowners and the developer so that steps can be taken to ensure that a landslide does not occur.

This Inanam homeowner looks on in dismay at the damage caused by the rock-slide.

“He also promised to try and get some professional advice from the Public Works Department on how to deal with the slope.”

Danny said Inanam Community Development Leader Datuk William Majimbun visited his aunt yesterday.

“She brought him to have a look at the damage and debris from the rockslide and personally expressed her frustrations over what had happened.”

When asked whether the developer’s activities could have inadvertently caused the rock-fall, the spokesman said City Hall would investigate these claims.

“We will have to determine what precisely is taking place on the other side of the hill and if the party concerned has our approval to do this,” he said.

“Should we have given the green-light for this work, then we will have to determine if these activities are being carried out according to the conditions we set.”
