Internet data assistance for students in Labuan

LABUAN: Hundreds of students from five schools in the duty-free-island here heaved a sigh of relief after having received and ‘internet data’ assistance scheme for their home-based learning.

The OneCALL (e-wallet) SIM card contributed jointly by the Zone Five of people’s representative council (Majlis Perwakilan Penduduk Zone Lima [MPP] and Kelab Belia Anak Layangan (KEBAL) was to assist the eligible students in preparation for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

MPP Zone Five chairman Fadillah Eddy Abdul Khalid said the scheme was aimed at lessening the financial burden of parents whose school-going children going through the home-based learning (online studies) for the SPM exams.

“We understand the financial burden of parents as we have been receiving complaints about difficulties of parents of providing internet data for their school-going children for online-study programmes,” he said Thursday.

He said the schools that have benefitted the programme was SK Layangan, SK Pekan 1, SMK Mutiara and SMK Labuan and SMK Lajau.

Fadillah said plans are on the cards for several schools to also enjoy the programme and only student who are fulfilling the criteria is eligible to receive the assistance scheme.

“Among the criteria include the student’s parent must be among the B40 group and the student is placed under home-based learning programme,” he said.

He said the selection of the eligible students are thoroughly scrutinised by the respective school’s teachers.

Fadillah also said the MPP would identify school-going children in this federal territory whose parents died from Covid-19 since the pandemic hit the country to also receive the necessary assistance.
