Fish, prawns dead in Marudu river
KOTA MARUDU: Villagers in Kg Bintasan Laut suspect toxic discharge by a factory nearby is behind the river pollution that left hundreds of fish and prawns dead since Tuesday.Village Chief Mainour Suloi said a cat also died after drinking from the river which turned from clear to blackish. “This is the third time this has happened. However, this time it is worse, as it involved the death of fish and prawns,” he said. He was alerted about the matter on Tuesday evening and immediately rushed to the river to see for himself what had happened. “I was shocked. On Wednesday morning, I contacted the Department of Environment. A team from the department arrived the same day,” he said. Mainour and the Bintasan Laut Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) Zaton Mumin hoped the problem that deeply worried the villagers would be resolved immediately by the responsible party. The villagers want a firm commitment that it would not happen again as it affected their health and livelihood.
