Bid to escape from centre: Filipino jailed
Kota Kinabalu: A 51-year-old Filipino was jailed 12 months’ jail, Wednesday, for attempting to escape from the Manggatal Immigration Detention Centre, five months ago.

Labourer Josua Guavasano pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to try to run away from lawful detention at 9.45am on May 13 this year.

Josua was ordered to serve the sentence from Wednesday.

The court heard from the prosecution that Josua was among nine detainees who tried to escape from Block K of the centre.

Josua was among three detainees caught inside the centre while four others were arrested outside the centre after climbing the fence while two others were still at large, the court heard.

Prior to the incident, several detainees in the block slammed into the door, when personnel on duty was about to order a detainee to enter the block after completing cleaning work in front of the block.

The personnel fell down but managed to call for help from other personnel.

Some of the detainees snatched the key of the K block gate and tried to escape, said the prosecution.

Josua, who was not represented, requested for leniency, saying that he is married with eight children.

The court ordered Josua to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence.

He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Suriyati Jumain prosecuted.

In another case, a man was charged with trafficking 52.48gm of syabu.

Mayo Jimy was accused of committing the offence at 5pm on Oct 18 this year at the roadside of Bundusan, Penampang.

No plea was taken from Mayo, who was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The charge carries a punishment with either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes.

Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting applied for a new mention date while waiting for the chemist’s report and objected bail as the charge has no provision for bail.

Jessica set Nov 30 for mention and ordered Mayo to be further remanded.
