Booking and leasing a car made easy with the TREVO app.
Kota Kinabalu: Renting or leasing a car in Kota Kinabalu has never been easier with TREVO, a peer-to-peer car sharing and hosting mobile application owned by Socar Malaysia. On the app, a guest can browse through the car sharing marketplace which offers a range of mobility choices leased at different prices —- and book a car at the tip of their fingers.ADVERTISEMENT
The rate for a Perodua Bezza, for example, can start from as low as RM80 per day.
Once a vehicle has been selected and booked, guests may pick up the vehicle from the host from an agreed location —- which is a more convenient option compared to traditional car rental services. TREVO guests can opt-in for car delivery as well, for a small fee depending on the distance.
“Normally for traditional car rentals, one would need to fill up the form, book perhaps a week or a few days earlier and make various phone calls. But for TREVO, it’s all in the application,” said TREVO Operations Lead (Kota Kinabalu), Aaron Leong.
For the best experience, guests can book 24 hours to 48hours ahead. “This gives our hosts time to really prepare the car for the journey ahead.ADVERTISEMENT
“Guests would also be able to bag affordable deals on the app, as TREVO offers promotional codes with discounts ranging from 20 per cent to 30 per cent, while first-time users are eligible for up to 50 per cent discount.”
To register as a guest on the app, one is required to go through a Know Your Customer (KYC) process, provide their selfie along with details of their MyKad as well as a valid Malaysian Competent Driving Licence (CDL).

Alternatively, one can also choose to be a host, and potentially earn extra income by leasing their cars on the app. It also gives hosts the opportunity to offset the cost of their monthly car instalments.
“For example, the monthly instalment for a Perodua Myvi is about RM600 for a nine-year loan. By sharing your car at an average of seven days a month, you would be able to cover your monthly instalment cost.
Hosts can also work their way up to being a ‘Superhost’, which means that they always accept bookings and provide consistently good service to customers, and in turn are prioritised for any bookings from guests.
Aaron, who is a Superhost himself, says that he has managed to earn RM35,000 in net profits after a year of leasing his vehicles on the app.
“In Kota Kinabalu, we have a few Superhosts who have grown their portfolio to up to five to 10 cars, so this can be a business opportunity, not just a supplementary income,” he said.
In addition to the peer-to-peer service, TREVO also collaborates with local tourism industry players by curating attractive holiday packages for guests, through its campaign “TREVO KK Experience”, which is offered in gold and platinum packages.
Running until Dec 31, guests can claim a free holiday under the platinum package when they book on TREVO with a minimum spend of RM599, by using the code TRVEXPPLAT.
The free holidays range from a two-day one-night stay at the Palace Hotel Kota Kinabalu or Dinawan Island, among others.
Under the gold package, guests can claim a free experience when they book on TREVO with a minimum spend of RM250 up to RM598, by using the code TRVEXPGOLD.
The experiences range from Stand Up Paddling Lessons and Safari at Tanjung Aru to the Tembara Kayak Adventure at Kg Serusup, Tuaran, among others.
Additionally, TREVO has a referral scheme where one can earn money either as a guest or host.
“If you refer someone to book as a guest you can earn RM80, and if you refer someone to list their car, and that car gets their first booking within 30 days, you can earn RM100,” Aaron explained.
The TREVO application was launched in Kota Kinabalu in August last year, with about 700 cars listed in the marketplace by different hosts.
Those interested to use the TREVO app may use Daily Express’ referral code ‘DAILYEXPRS’ when booking a car. New users will get up to 50 per cent off on their first booking.
