Tuaran: The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, which will be implemented in 10 districts in Sabah, kicked off in Tuaran on Saturday.

The one-day programme was also attended by the Chief Minister’s wife, Datin Seri Panglima Hajah Juliah Salag, who was the guest of honour.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among women, especially on the importance of breast health education, early detection and health screening, in the Tuaran area.

The programme is a collaboration between the Kinabalu Breast Cancer Awareness Association (Kinabalu Pink Ribbon) with Sabah Breast Cancer Society-Pink Ribbon Centre, Breast Cancer and Endocrine Surgery Department Queen Elizabeth Hospital II (QEHII), Tuaran Malaysian National Single Mothers Organisation, Tuaran Murut Kadazandusun Association and the Sabah National Population and Family Planning Board (LPPKN).

Also present were Kinabalu Pink Ribbon Chairperson Laura Bazan and Chief Surgeon and Consultant, Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery, QEH II Dr Siti Zubaidah Sharif and Tuaran Division Bersatu Srikandi Chief Datin Jamaliah Antalip.

Earlier, Laura, on behalf of the Kinabalu Pink Ribbon, thanked the Chief Minister’s wife for her support in making the campaign a success.

She said the campaign was planned to be held in 10 districts with Tuaran being the first location. “This campaign will be continued to other districts, namely Sipitang, Pitas, Kota Belud, Ranau, Keningau, Papar, Kudat, Beaufort and Kota Kinabalu, in stages.

“Through the first outreach project for 2022, we will reach out to women to provide education and breast screening as well as health talks. “In this campaign, we use a machine called Advanced Portable Ultrasound to detect any suspicious lumps. This early detection enables the target biopsy to be done immediately,” she said at the event at Datuk Patrick Jilan Hall, Kampung Selupoh, here, Saturday.

Laura said with the cooperation of the local community, Kinabalu Pink Ribbon hoped the campaign would raise awareness, especially on the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

In conjunction with campaign which was attended by about 150 communities in the district, Juliah also visited the exhibition provided related to the campaign.
