Sarawak to forge maritime collaboration with Sabah, Labuan

LABUAN: The Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MoT) is looking into the possibility of forging a collaboration with Sabah and Labuan in the areas of maritime and logistics.State Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the collaboration was possible in view of the importance of the sectors for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

“The Ministry is looking into maritime and logistics…Sabah and Sarawak have similarities as both states are enforcing the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1960.
“We are also looking at common maritime areas in Sabah currently under the federal Marine Department’s jurisdiction that could be delegated to Sabah and Sarawak,” he said after visiting Labuan’s integrated logistics hub for the oil and gas industry at Asian Supply Base, here, Tuesday.
Lee and his entourage were received by ASB Chief Executive Officer Japar B Esteban and his senior officials.
Lee, who was on a one-day working visit to Labuan, held a closed door meetings with officials from the Sabah Ports and Harbours Department, Labuan Liberty Port operator Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd and Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd (ASB).

He toured the Asian Supply Base that houses 88 oil and gas-related international and domestic companies which are currently operating at ASB’s operation base, of which 16 were petroleum arrangement contractors while the remaining 71 were non-petroleum arrangement contractors.
“I also visited the Labuan Liberty Port, where I was briefed on its logistics support and cargo handling activities. I can see the similarities (at both ASB and the port), as in Sarawak we have an active oil and gas sector in Miri and Bintulu,” he said.

Lee described his visit as fruitful, as he could understand the running of logistics support (in ASB) in Labuan.
