Global Positioning System installed on female jumbo
LAHAD DATU: A Global Positioning System (GPS) collar was installed on a female elephant by the Wildlife Department in collaboration with the Borneo Elephant Conservation Centre (pic).

The GPS collar was attached to a female elephant from a carefully selected herd of elephants, according to District Wildlife Officer Silvester Saimin.

Before the elephants were shot with sedatives to simplify the GPS collar installation process, the Borneo Elephant Conservation Centre selected mature female elephants that met other criteria, he said.

The collar, which was supplied by WWF Sabah, was installed in a small agricultural area near the Ulu Segama Mersuli Forest, according to Silvester.

“The purpose of installing this collar is to make it easier for us to track the elephant herd’s movements.”

He went on to say, “It’s also to make it easier for us to regulate elephants, particularly those that enter the farm area.”

Meanwhile, Jibius Dausip, the Superintendant of the Borneo Elephant Conservation Centre, said the collar installation operation was done within three hours.

He said the operation went successfully, with the elephant’s collar being fastened in a short amount of time.

“We were lucky in that we were able to attach the collar in three hours, as compared to past operations that required days or weeks,” he said.
