SANDAKAN: Elopura Chinese Community Kapitan James Leong Tshun Kian advises the public to seek verification from the local bank in the event of receiving any notification via short messaging system (SMS) regarding bank transactions. To avoid being a victim of a fraud, he advises getting thorough verification from the nearest bank branch.ADVERTISEMENT
“It’s disheartening to learn that many people continue to fall victim to scammers despite repeated police cautions,” he said.
Scammers are now sending bogus bank transaction notifications by SMS and instructing the unsuspecting victim to call the phone number given in it, according to him.
“The best thing to do is ignore the SMS and call your local bank branch to verify,” he said, adding that many people have been scammed after replying to similar SMS.
He says that it simply takes a few minutes for scammers to withdraw money using bank data collected from victims who gave out their information after contacting the contact number listed in the fake bank notification.ADVERTISEMENT
Another approach to avoid becoming a victim of a scam is to seek guidance from the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID).
People can WhatsApp the CCID Infoline at 013-211 1222 from 8am to 12 midnight daily, they can also contact the CCID Scam Response Centre line at 03-26 0 1559 or 03-2610 1599 (8am to 8pm daily), download the Check Mule CCID application on Google Play Store “Check Scammers CCID” or visit https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my.
