AirAsia’s move to open new direct flights to Sabah hailed

Kota Kinabalu: The Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry welcomed AirAsia’s efforts in expanding its domestic and international network with the opening of new direct flights to Sabah.Its Minister, Datuk Jafry Ariffin is optimistic that the addition of the new route will definitely be able to attract more tourists as well as boost Sabah’s tourism industry.ADVERTISEMENT
To date, international routes from Kota Kinabalu are direct flights to Singapore and Manila. Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu to Korea via Jin Air flights has also started operating.
And starting next month, direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Bangkok will also be started.
The matter was among those discussed in a special meeting with AirAsia Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Riad Asmat at the AirAsia Group office, Kuala Lumpur, Thursday.
Also present were Permanent Secretary of the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Datuk Mohd Yusrie Abdullah, Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chief Executive Officer Noredah Othman and other government officials.ADVERTISEMENT
Jafry also had the opportunity to meet with Capital A Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
Tony expressed his appreciation to the Sabah Government for the cooperation forged over the decades in developing the AirAsia aviation industry in the State.

AirAsia is also expected to open more international flights in Sabah, however this depends on the opening of the country’s borders.
Meanwhile, the STB is also working with AirAsia through its super app in promoting attractive tourist destinations in Sabah.
Travelers can directly book flight and hotel packages, various meals and other experiences before embarking on a holiday.
Jafry is confident that the availability of a faster and stronger online travel agency platform will enable the tourism industry to grow faster.
