Covid cases climb to 170; Masidi warns of unknown variant
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s caseload peaked at 170 cases on Friday, a rise from 137 the day earlier – signifying an upward trend that is expected to continue as the country braces for another possible Covid-19 wave.Sabah’s Covid-19 Spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the next Covid-19 wave could possibly be triggered by a new, unknown variant. “However it is just an assumption for now until further investigation and research is done by the Malaysian Health Ministry.

“But social activities without Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) compliance have the potential to trigger higher numbers,” he said in a statement, Friday.

Kota Kinabalu topped the list with 63 cases, followed by Penampang (29), Putatan (12), Tawau (12), Papar (11) and Beaufort (9). “The number of districts recording higher cases have increased. 18 districts recorded new infections of which 17 registered a rise compared to the day before. “Of the 18 districts, five recorded double-digit figures namely Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan, Tawau and Papar. 13 other districts recorded one case. Only Penampang recorded a significant decrease of 13 cases. “Ten districts which were infection-free previously recorded new cases on Friday. Only three districts recorded zero infections, namely Pitas, Tongod and Ranau. The number of districts that did not record any new infections decreased from 16 the day before to nine on Friday” he said.

Masidi said 164 out of 170 cases were in category one and two, while three cases were recorded in category three, two in category four and one in category five. No deaths or new clusters were identified.
