TAWAU: The Tawau Welfare Division Office recorded 178 cases involving children in the first five months this year, related to crime, morals and other elements.

Of the figure, 89 were child protection cases involving 20 boys and 69 girls.

This was revealed by Tawau Social Welfare Officer Sarina Musa while officiating the Malaysian Family Children Workshop 2022 organised by the Tawau Children Protection Team (PPKK) in collaboration with the Sabah Community Services Council (MPMS) at Tawau Children’s Activity Centre (PAKK), here. It was also attended by Tawau PPKK Chairman Ahmad Dullah.

According to Sarina, the protection cases registered at the office are related to physical abuse, incest, neglect and custody disputes.

“More worryingly, many of the cases involve women and Muslims. Although the average number of cases is not much compared to the average population of Tawau, the situation is very worrying.

“This shows that a person’s level of awareness is highly dependent on their ability to curb the temptations and challenges of life that are quite challenging at this time,” she said.

In this regard, she called on all parties to play a role in helping the community and the department to deal with cases involving children (victims) for the benefit of future generations.

She said to help prevent cases of child abuse and neglect, skipping school, moral damage and other social problems, the department took the initiative to establish PPKK.

“The department is only able to register and manage cases that occured but PPKK must help in terms of prevention so that the community is aware of the importance of caring for children who are the future assets of the country,” he said.

On the workshop which was held for the first time after the Covid-19 pandemic period, Sarina hoped that the activities would benefit the children who participated in it, especially in preventing them from engaging in unhealthy social activities.

She hoped that PAKK which is run by PPKK would also be set up in other locations in Tawau because it would bring huge benefits to the target group.

Meanwhile, Ahmad said the workshop will be made an annual event by PPKK, in line with the role and function of the team in helping the department to curb unhealthy activities among children.

Various activities were held during the programme such as motivational talks by Tawau PAKK Chairman Ag Md Razi Ag Ibrahim, congkak competition, puzzle competition, colouring competition and storytelling competition.
