TAWAU: A mercury spill was reported at SMK Jambatan Putih, near here, after a thermometer broke in the school’s laboratory room, on Wednesday.

However, no one was injured in the incident, said Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief, Julius John Stephens Jr.

According to him, his party cleaned up the mercury spillage using sulfur powder and put it in a bag for disposal.

Earlier, he said, a team of six members including an officer was deployed to the location 10 kilometers away from BBP along with a machine for the operation.

“We received an emergency call at 8am and ended the operation at 8.33am after making sure there was no more danger in the location”.
