Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old singer was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with cheating a woman of RM11,625 over non-existent mobile phone sales.
Jo’ann Biligan on Wednesday pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles.
Jo’ann allegedly deceived Albiana Nini Albart @ Albert, by deliberately inducing the latter to make a payment of RM11,625 to her between March 28, 2020 and April 11 the same year in a unit at Deluxe Court in Kepayan.
The charge stated that the complainant would not have handed over the money if she had not been deceived by the offer.
The charge under Section 417 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both, on conviction.
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting in applying for a case management date, proposed bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.
Counsel Hairul V Othman requested for a lower bail amount and one surety.
Lovely set Oct 19 for case management and released the accused on a bail of RM1,500 in one surety.
In the same court, six people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.
Florence Chin, Saidi Zubairi, Hamdan Manan, Md Soffey Masaid, Aznil Amil and Md Safree Md Jan pleaded guilty separately to taking syabu at different locations here and in Penampang between June 23 and July 28.
Florence, Saidi, Soffey and Aznil were each sentenced to seven months jail, while Hamdan was fined RM2,200 or seven months jail. Safree was jailed two months and fined RM1,000 or three months jail.
Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction.
Meanwhile, Safree was also handed another two months jail and fined RM1,500 or five months jail after he admitted to having 0.15gm of syabu at Kg Sendil, Putatan on June 23, this year.
The charge under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both, on conviction.
